LIFE: TAKING CONTROL AFTER GRADUATION

INTRODUCING THE “LIFE” SERIES

The “LIFE” posts are essentially journal entries from me that I think others will be able to relate to. They will be random and varied, but always honest. Now to the post…

Anyone who knows me knows that I absolutely adore Janet Jackson. She’s one of the few iconic pop acts that actually produces deeply personal, conceptually-cohesive albums. Control inspired this post. So enjoy this classic throwback video, and try not to laugh at Janet’s “Frankenstein” hair and shoulder jerking.

This first LIFE post isn’t about Janet – it’s about me and all of my fellow recent college graduates (or soon-to-be graduates). Our lives are truly in our hands right now. We can do anything. We’re in CONTROL. Great. So what the hell do we do now?

VIDEO OVERLOAD

Some of music’s biggest names have been busy working on new videos.

First up is Rihanna with her military-inspired clip for “Hard”, in which she once again proves why we can’t take our eyes off her: she’s a bad girl in some bad ass clothes. Rihanna is well on her way to fashion icon status.

Mariah Carey debuted her video for the single “H.A.T.E. U. “ While the song is definitely one of the standout cuts from Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, the video is typical Mariah: 3 minutes of beauty shots that have absolutely nothing to do with the track. Gorgeous video, but with a killer track like “H.A.T.E. U.”, Mimi could’ve dug a little deeper for an actual concept.

Last up is Omarion’s tribute to Michael Jackson’s videography, “Hoodie”. With all the dark alley shots and the random hot girl, it’s clear that O was attempting to recreate the “You Rock My World” video. Naturally, he didn’t quite get to that level of greatness, but there’s no denying his talent as a dancer. “Hoodie” comes from Omarion’s new album Ollusion, which drops January 12.

RIHANNA MEETS SHY RONNIE

Over the weekend, Rihanna appeared on Saturday Night Live and performed her two latest singles – “Russian Roulette” and “Hard”. The star also showed off her acting chops in a digital short with SNL-created character Shy Ronnie (Andy Samberg). Absolutely hilarious.

Watch the video below. (Bear through the ad NBC makes you watch before the clip starts – it’s worth it!)

I GUESS I’M A RACIST

The conservative anti-healthcare reform movement sinks to a new low as filmmaker Ray Griggs releases this laughable spot opposing Obama’s healthcare plans. The ad suggests that those in favor of the president’s plan have a tendency to accuse health reform opponents of racism, and Griggs even uses “statistics” to back up his claim.

While everyone who opposes Obama’s plan is certainly not a racist, there has definitely been an increase in racist rhetoric from the conservative movement, whether it is from commentators like Rush Limbaugh or average people at tea party demonstrations. It’s interesting that someone from the conservative side felt bothered enough by the racism accusations to address the issue head-on in an ad. But having random people say, “I guess I’m a racist” while putting on their best puppy dog face isn’t as effective as Griggs probably hoped it would be. It’s actually funny – almost as funny as Rihanna and Shy Ronnie.

Watch the spot below.

ALICIA + BEYONCE = HOTNESS

Alicia Keys and Beyonce

The two most influential female R&B artists of the day have teamed up for what will undoubtedly knock in the clubs for months to come. “Put it in a Love Song” is a new cut that has surfaced from Alicia Keys’ new project The Element of Freedom. The track features Beyonce, and is a perfect marriage between Alicia’s old school flavor and Beyonce’s status as the number one rump shaker. The track is a bit repetitive, and the lyrics are the standard ‘hit-me-up-on-my-cell’ kind that has become all too commonplace today. But the song has two incredible voices and a ridiculous beat that make it just a little too hot to ignore. Alicia Keys should pat herself on the back for stepping out of her comfort zone and attempting something different. Good job ladies.

Check out the song in the player on the right – track 2.

The Element of Freedom drops December 15.

SARAH PALIN AND THE CRAZIES

Oh Sarah. Little sweet, folksy Sarah. You sure have an uncanny ability to bring out the uninformed, racist, and blindly patriotic, don’t you?

Well that’s exactly who showed up to a Columbus, OH book signing for Palin’s latest book, Going Rogue. In the clip below produced by liberal group New Left Media, Chase Whiteside casually interviewes several Palin supporters, asking them questions regarding her policies. While Chase never really got comprehendible or reasonable responses from anyone, he sure exposed a great deal about some of Palin’s Columbus supporters.

In all fairness, there are probably many uninformed Obama supporters out there as well. But what makes today’s uninformed conservative so striking is the fact that their support is so deeply rooted in fear and prejudice.

Here is one of the clip’s “greatest hits”. Watch the full video below.

SUPPORTER: We do need to have profiling. The “politically” correctness has gotta get out now. I mean, we’re Americans, and she sticks up for the American people, not for other people. We’re first, other people last.

TIGER CLIMBS A TREE

ESPN.com actually had a headline that read, “Tiger Woods at fault in one-car accident”. Really? If Tiger was the only human being involved, who else would be at fault? I know who – it was that damn tree’s fault. It strolled right in front of Tiger’s truck!

JANET‘S GETTING HER SWAG BACK

After unleashing a medley of hits at the American Music Awards a few weeks ago, Janet Jackson drops her latest video for the single “Make Me” from her new hits collection Number Ones. The video is classic Janet – great dancing, weird visual randomness, and unbelievable beauty shots (It’s hard to believe Janet is 43!). And the song has an element that’s been missing from much of Janet’s more recent work: that trademark Jackson family groove that made you want to dance no matter where you were. It’s good to see Miss Jackson getting back to basics.
